Merck and Garuda Indonesia Airline help Diabetics
Garuda Sentra Medika (GSM) - the health care of PT. Garuda Indonesia (Garuda Indonesia Airline) - in cooperation with the pharmaceutical company PT. Merck (Tbk) and the Indonesia Diabetes Assosiation (Persadia) has established a Diabetes Center Point in an effort to privide better, integrated service to diabetes patients.The Diabetes Center Point, located within GSM, was inaugurated by Garuda Indonesia's President & CEO Emirsyah Satar a CEO on 17 July 2008.
The Diabetes Center Point is an integrated service facility for diabetes patients, including consultating with doctors, and education clinic, and a foot clinic, and is fully equipped with information technology, enabling easier, faster service.
As is commondly known, diabetes mellitus (DM) can lead to a range of complication, which can even be fatal id not dealt with properly and promptly. Ever increasing numbers of people are suffering this disease, corresponding to changes in lifestyle, particularly the types of food consumed and failure to get enough physical exercise.
DM patients are four to five tomes greater risk of dying soon than non-diabetics. The most common causes of diabetes-related death are cononary heart disease (50%) and kidney failure (30%). Apart from death, DM can also lead to disabilities : around 30% of DM patients suffer blindness due to retinopathie complications, while 10% have to undergo leg amputations.
